We have a mission to enable as much bio-intensive urban agriculture across Te Awakairangi ki Tai as possible. In previous times we partnered around micro-farm set ups in the backyards of social housing, farms operating out of Rimutaka Prison, and more recently at Epuni Care and Protection, Epuni School and our model garden at The Remakery.
The kai we grow goes into our kitchen to provide healthy meals for members in our community, as well as supplying our café and grocer with locally grown, nutritious meals.

Together, we grow
Farming Sessions
Join Urban Kai Farms for one of our weekly farming sessions. We usually meet at The Remakery and go from there as a team, often coming back for lunch together.
Alongside our team, learn new skills and meet new people at one of our regular sessions, no experience is necessary.
The activities vary depending on the seasons, but we firmly believe farming is not a back-breaking activity. Come learn our clever methods for farming without digging! We turn organic materials otherwise destined for landfill into compost, and use chemical-free methods to attract beneficial insects and repel pests. Above all, we care for the soil to enhance the earth and provide the very best for our children—local, organically grown, nutrient-dense fruit and vegetables.
Sweet Little Jobs
We love welcoming those who want to share some time together. If you’d like to give us a helping hand, we have plenty of sweet little jobs:
Watering our plants
Processing the harvest
Sorting seeds
Potting Seedlings
Moving Plants
Organising our growing supplies
Garden tool maintenance
Making compost
Internships
If you have some extra time and are keen to use your gardening knowledge, come and mahi alongside our team of talented and enthusiastic farmers and volunteer whānau, and help us bring home the harvest to our community. You can reach us on the contact details listed below. We would love to hear from you.
The Remakery Gardens
Visit our gardens at The Remakery to see a working demonstration of an urban farm. Here you can see how a holistic approach which incorporates collaboration and circular systems, makes gardening in an urban environment possible and beneficial for all.
The Mulchery
Our arborist friends from Beaver Tree Service regularly provide us with mulch for our community to use in their gardens. Mulch can help our gardens retain moisture, suppress weeds, and provide nutrients for the soil food web.
Visit our community mulch pile at The Remakery and collect a bucket or sack of mulch for your garden. If you are able, a donation is appreciated to help support the work we do. You can give a cash donation to our café or head over to our donate page to see other ways you can support us.
Compost Hub
We are big about compost and are always looking for ways to turn waste into beautiful compost teaming with life. We divert organic material going to landfill and recycle food scraps.
Once a month, we host a compost workshop. Come along and learn the basics of composting, troubleshoot any issues you might have, learn about our circulatory system and see how we not only farm produce, but microbes and fungi too. These are usually held the first Saturday of the month, check out our Facebook events page.
Give the gift of growing with Urban Kai Farms Gift Cards.
Support Our Mission
We welcome offers of sponsorship and donations of organic seeds, fertiliser and equipment. Visit our donation page if you are able to help.
