Unity Kitchen - Mai te ihi o te rā

Our beautiful, off-grid, community kitchen is open! From our Unity Kitchen we will cook low-cost, wholesome meals “mai te ihi o te rā” – powered by the sun.

For every meal purchased, another is gifted to local school children. Unity Kitchen builds on our learnings from working out of the Epuni School kitchen over the last five years. Now we’re inviting other local schools and organisations to take part. Many would like meals to be accompanied with a learning programme, to reduce reliance and become self-sustaining.

Our new kitchen also provides us with much-improved facilities to process and store the harvest from our Urban Kai Farms. We’re very glad to have the expertise of Kitchen Manager Praveena Kumari join us in this adventure.

Unity Kitchen – Mai te ihi o te ra is set in a converted shipping container, with solar panels, gas canisters and a tank system to catch rainwater. It is one of Common Unity’s greatest milestones and four years in the making.

If you would like to know more about the Unity Kitchen, order meals or donate food or time, please contact Development Director Julia Milne: julia@cupa.org.nz.
