What do different puananī look like? - look around the garden and point out different seeds Most veggie plants grow from puananī. Often we can find seeds inside or outside of a flower or fruit. Once a plant has made puananī, we can collect them and use them to grow more.

Questions to start off the activity with

  • What have we noticed in the māra/garden recently?

  • Where do plants come from?

  • Where can we find seeds/puananī?

  • How do we know when puananī are ready to collect?

Activity

  1. Spend some time looking around the garden for dried puananī ready for collection.

  2. Show children how to harvest puananī into paper cups.

  3. Then get children to each pick a magazine page and show them how to make an envelope (kōpaki).

  4. Get children to label and decorate their kōpaki.
